Stupid Crime of the Day: Carjackers Likely to Die After Radioactive Exposure Posted: 05 Dec 2013 03:25 PM PST On Monday, a driver in Mexico transporting the radioactive material cobalt-60 from a medical facility, pulled to the side of the road to take a nap when two gunmen highjacked the truck he was driving. The International Atomic Energy Agency stated: ""At the time the truck was stolen, the source was properly shielded. However, the [cobalt-60] could be extremely dangerous to a person if removed from the shielding, or if it was damaged." Submitted by: Unknown (via Gawker) |

The Merriam-Webster Word of the Year Is: Science Posted: 05 Dec 2013 10:15 AM PST That choice may seem quotidian next to Oxford's buzzworthy selection, selfie, but the editors argue that their word embodies the culture of 2013 in its own way. "Our data shows … that many of the most looked-up words in the dictionary are words that reflect the big ideas that are lurking behind the headlines," writes Editor-at-Large Peter Sokolowski in a statement. The editors link science, a word users looked up 176% more than last year, to political discussions of climate change and education, as well as Malcolm Gladwell's latest book, criticized as a misrepresentation of science.
