While most dads would explain how the world actually works, Heaton found 800 square miles of disputed land in Africa, planted a flag, and "claimed" it. The Keurig for Beer Posted: 14 Jul 2014 03:58 PM PDT The company's prototype, called the SYNEK draft system, sits on your kitchen counter and dispenses beer—even from the most obscure craft breweries. The secret behind this "Keurig for beer" is a new kind of flexible packaging that holds the equivalent of about eleven 12-ounce beer cans, says SYNEK strategic director Mike Werner. The idea is that any brewery can fill up the bags and ship them out in cartridges, which look like the boxes coffeehouses sell for meetings. Take a box home, pop it into the toaster-size SYNEK, and pour a cold one whenever you want. The cartridges keep the beer fresh for about 30 days and are as easy to store as a bag of ground coffee. Weird Science of the Day: Smelling Farts Might Prevent Cancer Posted: 14 Jul 2014 12:00 PM PDT Scientists out of the University of Exeter are implying that smelling farts could actually prevent cancer, among other diseases. "Although hydrogen sulfide gas"—produced when bacteria breaks down food—"is well known as a pungent, foul-smelling gas in rotten eggs and flatulence, it is naturally produced in the body and could in fact be a healthcare hero with significant implications for future therapies for a variety of diseases," Dr. Mark Wood said in a university release. Although the stinky gas can be noxious in large doses, scientists believe that a whiff here and there has the power to reduce risks of cancer, strokes, heart attacks, arthritis, and dementia by preserving mitochondria.
