Today's Manufactured Controversy: Was Flea's Bass Plugged in During the Super Bowl? Posted: 04 Feb 2014 04:01 PM PST This is the image that's been making the rounds from Sunday's Super Bowl half-time show. Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea - who is tragically without a sock attached to his junk in this pic - doesn't appear to be plugged in to anything during his performance in front of one of the largest televised crowds ever. This is apparently important because some people are really concerned about artistic authenticity and musicianship in one of the most choreographed and over the top performances of the year. Going the safe route with pre-recorded audio in a venue of this size and magnitude isn't unheard of (see: Every pop vocalist in the past 30 years), and it's conceivable that after last year's electricity-shorting event the staff of Super Bowl XLVIII wanted to play it safe. Of course, others are quick to point out that Flea could have been using some sort of wireless transmitter pack, as seen in this picture here: What can we really take away from this? Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers managed to put on a performance so bombastic that I haven't even mentioned Beyoncé once this entire post. Wait.
